C³ ~ Review

C³ ~ Review

“A violent killing torture machine born from a cube has never been cuter!”

The first time I heard about this anime, I was really interested to see what it was like. At first, I thought it would be just another fantasy romantic comedy/ecchi/harem story; you know, the ones where a mysterious girl comes out of nowhere and begins to like the protagonist and all that. But I soon found out that this series is quite different.

C³ (pronounced “C-cube”) revolves around a boy called Haruyuki Yachi, who receives a strange package from his dad overseas. The package contains a large, extremely heavy black cube. As he cannot do anything about it, he leaves the package alone. That night, he awakes to strange noises coming from the kitchen. Upon inspection, he sees a small, naked girl with glistening blue hair. Her name is Fia, or “Fear”, and although she may look like a normal tsundere, Haruyuki later discovers the horrible identity that is Fear. Now, Haruyuki must protect Fear from incoming threats and danger while trying to lift the curse that has been beset on Fear.

Although there are many serious action and even horror scenes, the series consists of comedy and romantic elements as well

The most notable part of the series is the clever switches between various genre’s; ranging from supernatural action, horror and psychological, to romantic comedy and harem/ecchi. The character Fear is played by Yukari Tamura, who is most notable as playing the voices of Rika in Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni and Mai in Kanon, does an excellent job in playing a tsundere character, a character that she is usually not used to. The artwork design and animation done by Studio Silver Link (who animated such series as Baka To Test To Shoukanjyuu and Kokoro Connect) does an excellent job in the action scenes and the overall presentation of the characters and plot.

The one downside that I can say about this series is that here was no definite ending to the series; it almost stopped suddenly leaving us on a half-ending. But if we leave that out, is a well presented anime that all audiences will surely enjoy. If you can, I would also recommend reading the original light novel that the anime is based on; it is nice read.

The Final Judgement:

Recommendation Level: 4/5 – Strongly Recommended

Final Score: 7.5/10

In my opinion, C-cube is the most disappointing anime I have ever watched. I felt like almost nothing was explained properly, and some characters felt so weak that I didn’t even care about them. The only “good” episode to me was episode 3, and that’s only because it was the only moment Fear went insane and creepy. I thought they would have had more stuff like that, but nope. And those stupid-a** villains were coming out of nowhere.
At least, the animation was great (i mean, it’s Silver Link, which always has good animation), and I also liked the openings/endings/soundtrack.
    4/10 for me.
