Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ~ Review

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ~ Review

“A series that is so mad and crazy, that it’s beyond epic!!”

I could seriously write all day about how awesome and epic this series is. Like seriously. This here is a series that is just so awesome that I was shaking with excitement after it ended. And that doesn’t happen often with anime, trust me. But this here is something that was totally different to what I expected. And so I’m about to show you a series that I have seriously loved ever since it first came out.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (or Gurren Lagann for short) revolves around a world where human’s live underground in large colonies, fearing the threats of the Spiral King and his army that thrive on the surface. But one day, Simon the Digger discovers an ancient weapon, which he names Gurren. With the power of Gurren, Simon and his “bro”, Kamina, break through the surface and start a journey to take down the Spiral King. Meeting many companions and enemies, Simon, Kamina and Yoko attempt to take down the threats of the world and the rest of the universe with the “heaven-piercing” Gurren Lagann.

The series is highly acclaimed for its fast-paced action, characters and amazing plot and storyline.

The series contains 27 episodes and aired during mid-2007. The series is directed by acclaimed director Imaishi Hiroyuki, who brought us such series as Panty & Stocking with Gaterbelt and the short anime film Dead Leaves. The series is animated by highly acclaimed animation studio Gainax, who animated such iconic series as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Medaka Box and This Ugly Yet Beautiful World. The series has been highly acclaimed all over the world; many other manga series and American Comic series have made references to the series while others have even included cameo appearances of characters from Gurren Lagann in their own manga and comics. Many anime review sites and magazines have even quoted the series as being “one of the greatest mecha series of the decade”.

The series features some notable voice actors including Kakihara Tetsuya who voices Simon (and is also known as the voices of Amaimon from Ao no Exorcist and Sarutobi Sasuke from Brave10), Konishi Katsuyuki who voices Kamina (and is also known as the voices of Amidamaru from Shaman King and Oga Tatsumi from Beelzebub) and Inoue Marina who voices Yoko (and is also known as the voices of Yozora from Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai and Miyamoto Rei from High School of the Dead).

I haven’t seen every single anime series that has come out so I’ll say it like this: I believe that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is one of the most epic and fantastic series that I have ever watched. I’m not saying that it’s the best, but it is definitely, definitely up there. I just loved everything about the anime; the characters, the story, the animation, the music, the voice actors… like I said earlier in this review, I could seriously write all day about why this series is just so epic. But if you really want to find out for yourself, then I highly, highly recommend you go and watch this series now if you haven’t yet done so. You will definitely punch yourself later for not watching this series sooner.

The Final Judgement:

Recommendation Level: 5/5 – Highly Recommended

Final Score: 10/10
