Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo ~ Review

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo ~ Review

“A cute, inspiring and beautiful story of friends, connection and an inseparable family”

If you want a love story, a cute story, an inspiring story, a dramatic story, a feel-good story, or a tear-jerking story, then you should probably watch this series. Because it just so happens to have all of the above stories in one unforgettable tale of friendship, love and the importance of never forgetting to dream. I can guarantee that by the end of this series, you will be tear-jerked, heart-pounded and inspired all in one.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo revolves around a high school dormitory called Sakurasou, under the Suimei Academy of Arts, which is known as been the breeding grounds of some of the most troublesome students in the academy. After moving to Sakurasou due to pet problems, Kanda Sorata discovers the bunch of crazy and unique characters that reside in the infamous Sakurasou. As Sorata starts his life in Sakurasou he is greeted by Shiina Mashiro, a world famous artist that has run from home to become a manga artist. Shiina decides to move to Sakurasou in which Kanda becomes Shiina’s take-carer. The story follows the lives of Sorata and the Sakurasou gang as they live their drama-filled high school lives, while trying to discover and uncover their dreams to become what they sought out to be.

The genres span from romance and comedy, to drama and coming-of-age

The anime spanned for 24 episodes that aired during the Fall 2012 Anime Season and the Winter 2013 Season (September 2012 – March 2013, ending today at the time of this writing). The series was originally a light novel series written by Kamoshida Hajime, that is still being serialised to this time of writing. The anime series is animated by J.C. Staff Studios, who are known for such highly acclaimed works such as Zero no Tsukaima and Toradora!.

The anime features a fairly large number of well known actors and actresses, including  Matsuoke Yoshitsugi who voices Kanda Sorata (and is also known as the voices of Kusanagi Godou from Campione! and Kirito from Sword Art Online), Kayano Ai who voices Shiina Mashiro (and is also known as the voices of Menma from AnoHana and Tachibana Mei from Suki-tte IInayo.) and Sakurai Takahiro who voices Mitaka Jin (and is also known as the voices of Makishima Shougo from Psycho-pass and Mikadono Shougo from Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru!).

This anime was not only great because of its amazingly simple yet beautiful storyline, but it also heavily relied on the coming-of-age of each character that was cleverly inter-twined into the forward momentum of the story. As each character grew a little more mature, each characters own story was altered slightly. All in all, the series was also very inspiring; having the main idea of “never giving up on your love, dreams and life” and that “there is always a place to return to”. I like that idea, and I truly hope that we can all one day find a Sakurasou of our own. The anime just ended today (at this time of writing) and I am emotionally bawling my eyes out. So watch this, because if not, you have no soul.

I love Sakurasou; one of the few anime that have made me cry. It is my 3rd favourite anime ever.
