Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. ~ Review

“Possibly the introduction of the greatest protagonist in all of anime history!!”

So right here, we have another romantic comedy/slice-of-life type anime’s. Just remember: if the title is quite long then chances are it comes from a light novel series (they all have these long titles nowadays for some strange reason). But if you thought this looks like another ordinary love comedy, then you will very very surprised indeed! Because you may about to be introduced to one of the most awesome and unique protagonists in all of anime!

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. (English title: My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU), Oregairu for short, revolves around Hikigaya Hachiman, a high school student who seems like your typical loner kid. However, he is very pragmatic and deals with situations in a very negative, loner-perspective way. One day, he is forced to join the school’s Service Club where he meets the beautiful but cold-hearted Yukinoshita Yukino. The two spend the rest of their days helping fellow students through situations commonly found in high school students such as social, educational and other psychological issues.

The series blends aspects of social psychology with that of romantic comedy and slice-of-life to create a layed-back, yet psychologically intense romcom

The anime contains 12 (+ 1 OVA) that aired during the Spring 2013 Anime Season (April 2013 – June 2013), ending today to this time of writing. The anime is a highly acclaimed anime in the Spring 2013 Anime Season, usually seen in the Top 5 Anime’s of the Season. The anime is originally based of an ongoing light novel series written by Watari Wataru and illustrated by Ponkan8. The anime is animated by Studio Brain’s Base, who have brought us such iconic anime’s as Natsume Yuujinchou, Baccano! and Durarara!!

The anime features some notable voice actors including Eguchi Takuya who voices Hikigaya Hachiman (and is also known as the voices Koikawa Shungiku from Mushibugyou and Kujo Kazuya from GOSICK), Hayami Saori who voices Yukinoshita Yukino (and is also known as the voices of Morimi Saki from Eden of the East and Haqua from The World God Only Knows) and Touyama Nao who voices Yuigahama Yui (and is also known as the voices of Nakagawa Kanon from The World God Only Knows and Little Sister Maid from Maoyuu Maou Yuusha).

The one comment that I saw in all the episode of this anime is how awesome the main protagonist, Hikigaya Hachiman, is and was. And that is very true; this anime would definitely have not been the same if it wasn’t for the main protagonist. In fact, even the main female protagonist, Yukinoshita Yukino was very effective as well. I think the reason why this anime became quite successful in both the light novel and the anime, is because of the clever combination of character personalities and the mix of genres and themes that the anime/light novel is centered around. Props to Watari Wataru; a very clever writer and I hope to pick up this light novel sometime soon and give it a read because I heard it was very good. While you’re at it, give this anime a go if you haven’t yet. You’ll fall in love with Hikki as well, no doubt.

The Final Judgement:

Recommendation Level: 5/5 – Strongly Recommended

Final Score: 9.5/10
