Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. ~ Review

“A hilarious love story between an emotionless girl and a pervert boy!”

We’ve all seen these pervert – or ” hentai” – characters in anime before. There’s nothing really new about that. But even so, this anime makes the pervert character new and refreshing somehow. It may be because of the rather unique heroine of this series, or it may be because this anime is just awesome in it’s own right! Let’s get to the bottom of this mystery by reviewing this rather cute and unique anime series!

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. revolves around Yokodera Youto, a seamlessly harmful pervert high school student. He has a problem that he cannot express his emotions clearly. One day, his friend tells him about the “warawanai neko”  statue at the top of a hill, telling him that by wishing upon the statue and giving it an offering, the statue is able to remove a personality trait from a person and give it to someone else who is need of that trait. As Yokodera makes his offering, he stumbles upon a girl, Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, who is making a wish to the statue to make herself more like an adult and to not show her emotions so easily. Tsukiko ends up taking on the trait that Yokodera wished to get rid of, but ends up being completely emotionless. Feeling responsible, Yokodera promises to help Tsukiko get her emotions back from whoever it went to.

The anime is known for its romantic comedy elements and rather heavy and emotional back-stories.

The anime ran for 12 episodes during the Spring 2013 Anime Season (April 2013 – June 2013). The anime is based off a running light novel series written by Sagara Sou and illustrated by Kantoku. The anime is animated by J.C. Staff Studios, who gave us such highly acclaimed series like Little Busters!, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

There are some notable voice actors that make an appearance in this anime; most notably Kaji Yuuki who voices Yokodera Youto (and is also known as the voices of Eren Jaeger from Shingeki no Kyojin and Hyodou Issei from High School DxD), Ogura Yui who voices Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko (and is also known as the voices of Alice from Kamisama no Memo-chou and Athena from Campione!and Ishihara Kaori who voices Azuki Azusa (and is also known as the voices of Ayuzawa Suzuna from Kaichou wa Maid-sama! and Okura Mina from Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai.).

Overall, this anime was something familiar and yet unique at the same time. Familiar in a fact that this is another romantic comedy/ecchi anime about boy-meets-girl, and unique in the fact that the character development and the mix between the rather happy scenes and the rather dark and emotional back-stories of different characters is intertwined so neatly together that it almost seems familiar. By watching this anime, you’ll be treats to different emotions, making this anime seem more full-on then it’s supposed to be. If you want something nice, or full of emotion, then this anime is for you.
