Shingeki no Kyojin ~ Review

Shingeki no Kyojin ~ Review

“A dark fantasy tale of titanic proportions!”

Since anime has made it outside the walls of Japan, it has made a large impact on many people and fans. But this anime is possibly one of the first series that got people who are not only into anime, but have never heard or watched anime before to start watching anime. And I mean, EVERYBODY. Well, if you watch this series, then you may just know why that phenomenon occurred.

Shingeki no Kyojin (english: Attack on Titan) revolves around a fantasy world. 100 years ago, humanity were forced into hiding and retreat when colossal humanoids called Titans (kyojin’s) ruled the land. Titans feast on humans, and caused humanity into the brink of extinction. Humanity built three giant walls to trap themselves inside from the Titans. They lived in peace for 100 years until one day, a giant Titan broke the wall and Titans started to invade. The story revolves around Eren; a young boy who loses her mother after being eaten by a Titan. Eren, and her friends Armin and Mikasa join the military to rid of the Titans from this world.

With its superb animation, gore, psychological elements and character and story development, many have cited this anime to be the greatest series from 2013.

The anime contains 25 episodes and aired during the Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 Anime Season (April 2013 – September 2013). The anime is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Isayama Hajime. The series is animated by Wit Studios who, with their extraordinary animations skills with Production I.G., debuted on this series showing us what the production company is capable of. Many have credited Wit Studios for its amazing work with 3D, especially in the anime’s two openings.

The anime is also well-known for its superb voice acting, with a cast of well-known voice actors and actresses including Kaji Yuuki who voices Eren (and is also known as the voices of Hyoudou Issei from High School DxD and Arita Haruyuki from Accel World), Inoue Marina who voices Armin (and is also known as the voices of Mizatsuki Yozora from Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai and Yatogami Touka from Date A Live) and a whole bunch of other great and talented voice actors and actresses including Shimono Hiro (Connie), Shimamura Yuu (Annie) and Kamiya Hiroshi (Levi).

All in all, while the series had its flaws, I could easily rank this up high in the greatest anime series of 2013. With its fast paced actions, dark and psychological elements, horror and gore and its awesome soundtrack and animation sequences, there is something in this anime that gave people all over the world chills of excitement. If you’re reading this and didn’t (or haven’t) watched this anime thus far, then you are the 1%. So please, go and watch this anime. It can arguably be even ranked the greatest anime of all time, but my opinions differ a little with that ( I don’t want to say anything like that in case people disagree). But this anime is sure to be a favourite of yours after watching it. And if there isn’t a second season then we’re going to see a lot of killing in our streets… (although there is news of a live-action anime film coming out sometime soon).
