IS: Infinite Stratos ~ Review
“The harem that defines the term harem”
The genre of harem can come in all shapes and sizes, but the most commong one that we see in the wonderful world of anime is that of one male protagonst being surrounded by many female characters. Well, this anime may have been one of the many anime series that stapled that common factor of the idea of a harem into the anime world. And what a harem it is indeed!
IS: Infinite Stratos is set in future Japan, where the military has created super-powered exo-skeletal machines called Infinite Stratos. However, the IS can only be used and moved by a female; that is until one day, Orimura Ichika is seen moving an IS and is sent to an IS scool as a “special student”. That school, that teaches all its students the basics and techniques used to become an IS pilot is, evidently, all girls. Meeting new foes(?) and friends, Ichika must make it through the school, while every student in the school watches him with eyes peeled (in more ways than one).
Many have complained, however, about the lack of awareness that the protagonist has in terms of his harem lifestyle
The anime contains 12 episodes that aired during the Winter 2011 Anime Season (January 2011 – March 2011). The series contains 2 seasons (with the second season, Infinite Stratos 2, airing currently at the time of this writing). The anime series is based of an ongoing light novel series written by Yumizuru Izuru. The series is animated by 8-bit Studios, who have only been known to produce and animated this series.
The anime has a wide variety of characters and thus has a wide variety of talented voice actors and actresses including Uchiyama Kouki who voices Orimura Ichika (and is also known as the voices of Takigawa Yoshino from Zetsuen no Tempest and Alis from Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi), Hikasa Youko who voices Shinonono Houki (and is also known as the voices of Mio from K-ON! and Rias from Highschool DxD) and Hanazawa Kana who voices Charlotte (and is also known as the voices of Maria from Shinsekai Yori and Sengoku Nadeko from the Monogatari series).
This anime is, for more of the better words, a stand-of-the-mill harem/fantasy series. But it’s also kind of nice to see such simple harem/comedy series from the other complicated series. Although we all hate to admit it guys and gals (more importantly guys), but we all love a good harem series. But it does get a bit annoying when there is a naked girl in your bed and the protagonist is completely oblivious. We all only wish we could ever be in that same situation. Other good points for this anime is the animaton style; the action sequences are quite fluid and different, using elements of 3D animation to full effect. If you love a harem series, then this one is definitely for you. You’ll definitely have a favourite girl by the end of it (#TeamCharlotte).
The Final Judgement:
Recommendation Level: 4/5 – Strongly Recommended
Final Score: 7/10
