Hidan No Aria ~ Review

Hidan No Aria ~ Review

“High action scenes mixed with romantic comedy that doesn’t cease the fan service”

This anime is another one of those that have been adapted from a long-running light novel series, much like The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi and Shakugan No Shana. However, out of the light novel anime’s that I have watched (and I have watched a lot), this one seems to be a little different.

Hidan No Aria revoles around the main protagonist Kinji Toyama (pictured above on the far right) and his time as a Butei; a special qualification that allows for armed weapons use and capturing criminals. After a tragic accident and the loss of his brother, Kinji decides to quit becoming a Butei. Then one day, from the sky, a young girl named Aria (pictured above in the middle) appears and tells him to become “her slave”. While searching for the Butei Killer that threatens the two, Kinji soon realises that his future as a Butei will start to drastically.

Both voice actors of Kinji (Junji Majima) and Aria (Rie Kugimiya) have been known to play in many protagonist/heroine roles together in many anime series (e.g. ToraDora! and Zero No Tsukaima)

Like your average light novel, there is a strong genre of romantic comedy, where the Kinji and Aria end up getting closer and closer together as the series progresses. And much like most romantic comedies, this story involves some harem elements. What was a nice change to your average romantic comedies was that this series contained many action scenes, and not the half-assed ones that you could imagine. I believe this was a big plus to the story and the series in general.

Hidan No Aria may have a few shortages concerning character development and overall execution, however this should not stop you from not watching this series. And of course, the famous Rie Kugimiya, who is known in the anime business and by fans as “the queen of tsundere” lays an excellent role as Aria, and definitely makes the series that much better.
